The time in the wilderness is a time of carnality of being controlled by self, or the flesh.
This may be the case, but a devoted minister who is working his heart out for the Lord and has never experience the Cross has self in the ascendancy and still carnal, living and ministering in his own strength.
Self must be brought back to the cross in order that Christ might again be in control.
"We are more than conquerors through him that loved us." (Rom. 8:37)
"Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matt. 11:28)
The sinner trusts Christ as Savior. The "selfer" trusts Christ as Life. We are reconciled to God by the death of his Son, but we are saved (from ourselves) by his life. (Rom. 5:10)
